If you're mowing on a strict weekly schedule all summer long, you might actually be doing more harm than good — especially during a Kansas City heat wave.
Here's the short answer: mow based on growth, not the calendar. And in summer, that changes.
Why summer mowing is different
Kansas City summers are hot and often dry. When temperatures climb into the 90s and rain gets scarce, your lawn slows down. Cool-season grasses like tall fescue, the most common lawn grass in the KC area, can go semi-dormant in peak summer heat. Warm-season grasses like zoysia and bermuda keep growing but don't need to be pushed.
Mowing a stressed lawn too often, or cutting it too short, removes the leaf blade the grass needs to protect itself and absorb water. You end up with a lawn that looks worse, not better.
General summer mowing guidelines
Tall fescue: Every 10–14 days during hot, dry stretches. Keep the blade height at 3.5 to 4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, retains moisture, and handles heat better.
Zoysia: Every 7–10 days. Mow at 2 to 2.5 inches. Zoysia is more heat-tolerant but still doesn't need to be scalped.
Bermuda: Every 7 days if actively growing. Keep it at 1.5 to 2 inches. Bermuda loves heat and will keep growing through summer if it's getting water.
The one-third rule
No matter what grass you have, never cut more than one-third of the blade at once. If your lawn got long during a rainy stretch, don't try to get it back to height in one pass. Take it down gradually over two or three mowings.
Signs your lawn needs a break, not a mow
- Grass blades are folded or curled lengthwise
- Footprints stay visible after you walk across the lawn
- Color has shifted from green to a dull blue-gray
These are signs of heat and drought stress. Mowing a lawn in this condition, especially with a dull blade, adds stress on top of stress.
When to call for help
If your lawn looks rough despite reasonable watering and mowing habits, it might be time for a professional eye. Compaction, grub damage, and fungal issues can all look like drought stress but need different solutions.
