Timing is everything in lawn care, and nowhere is that truer than with trees and shrubs.
Prune at the right time and your plants reward you with healthy growth and great shape.
Prune at the wrong time and you can stress the plant, invite disease, or cut off the very buds that were about to bloom.
Here's what Kansas City property owners need to know.
The General Rule: Late Winter To Early Spring
For most trees and shrubs, the sweet spot for pruning is late winter through early spring, after the hardest freeze has passed but before new growth begins.
At this point plants are still dormant, making it easier to see the structure of branches clearly, wounds heal quickly as growth season begins, and the risk of disease and pest activity is at its lowest.
Trees: What To Watch For
Most shade trees (oaks, maples, elms) do well with late winter pruning.
One important exception: oak trees in Kansas City should not be pruned between April and October due to the risk of oak wilt, a serious fungal disease spread by beetles that are most active in warmer months.
When in doubt, late winter is the safest window for oak pruning in this region.
Shrubs: Bloom Time Matters
With shrubs, the key question is when they bloom.
Spring-blooming shrubs like lilacs and forsythia set their buds in the fall. Pruning them in late winter removes those buds and costs you the spring bloom. These are best pruned immediately after they finish flowering.
Summer-blooming shrubs like butterfly bush and Rose of Sharon bloom on new growth and can be pruned in late winter without any issue.
Year-Round Exceptions
Regardless of timing, dead, damaged, or crossing branches should be removed as soon as you spot them.
Waiting for the ideal pruning window isn't worth the risk when a compromised branch could cause damage to your property or the plant itself.
The Bottom Line
Proper pruning takes more than a pair of loppers and a free afternoon.
It takes knowledge of the plant, the season, and the right technique.
